The role of the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) in the development of the northern part of the Philippines cannot be discounted, since it has potentials in agribusiness and is a vital watershed cradle.  According to NEDA Director General Cayetano Paderanga Jr. in a speech before various stakeholders in the region,  the PDP has made regional and local development an important concern, as sustainability becomes an overriding concern in regional development.  He added that CAR plays a key role in promoting ecological balance since it is the watershed cradle of Central and Northern Luzon.

“Your Regional Development Plan, therefore, calls for the adoption of ecosystem-based management approaches and natural resources-based economic endeavors, such as agri-tourism. This is a challenge that the Cordillera region may want to take on.” the Cabinet official said.

Furthermore, the NEDA chief also mentioned that cultivating high-value crops in the Cordillera, including cut flowers, vegetables and fruits, needs to be balanced with strengthening the resilience of its natural system and protecting the environment.
