The Regional Development Council (RDC)- Sectoral Committee on Watershed and Environmental Management chaired by DENR-CAR Regional Director Ralph Pablo met on May 11 to iron out the details for the 34th Cordillera Month Celebration for endorsement to the Regional Development Council.

The committee proposed the theme “Working Together Towards Cordillera Autonomy through Green Recovery” for this year’s Cordillera Month Celebration highlighting the use of green technology for the region’s sustainable recovery from the pandemic towards Regional Autonomy. Green technology is the use of environment-friendly production and resource management practices in livelihood and other economic activities.

Committee plans included a simultaneous Tree Planting in all the CAR provinces and Baguio City prior to a Kapihan Press Conference on July 1 to kick-off the month-long celebration, with the participation of the different Regional Line Agencies (RLA), Civil Society Organizations (CSO) and private sector partners. Various activities are also proposed for the celebration including a series of webinars on the utilization of green technologies and innovations in industries to support economic recovery and sustainable resource use under the new normal.   The Cordillera Day Celebration is set on July 15 with messages from national and local officials, CAR Congressional representatives and other stakeholders on regional autonomy and sustainable development. Due to the pandemic, the committee is prepared to commemorate the occasion with a pure online or blended modality depending on the community quarantine restriction or classification at that time. DENR-CAR Regional Director Ralph Pablo said “In the event that gatherings are allowed by the time we are doing the activity, then we can adapt the blended way of the celebration.” On July 30, a Kapihan Press Conference on the 2020 State of the Region and Sectoral Reports will mark the end of the month-long celebration.

The Cordillera month celebration is an RDC-led initiative to commemorate the founding anniversary of the Cordillera Administrative Region through Executive Order 220 signed on July 15, 1987 as a transition towards an Autonomous Region as mandated by the Constitution. The celebration aims to showcase the rich culture and history of the Cordillera and the unwavering spirit of the Cordillerans in pursuing regional autonomy.
