“Know the story behind the numbers”.
This was the challenge of Ms. Carmel Matabang, Chief Economic Development Specialist of NEDA-CAR, to the participants of the National Statistics Month Closing Program held on October 28 at the University of the Philippines Baguio. She represented Director Milagros Rimando who chairs the Cordillera Regional Statistics Committee (RSC)
In her message to the participants from various government agencies and local government units of the Cordillera Region, Ms. Matabang said that more than knowing the latest statistics, people in government must discern the reliability and implications of these statistics to development and use them as basis for sound policy formulation and decision-making.
Also gracing the activity and sharing their thoughts on statistics were Dir. Villafe Alibuyog of PSA, Dir. Venus Tan of DOT, Baguio City Councilor Elmer Datuin, and DOST Asst. Regional Director Nancy Bantog. They underscored the importance of statistics in evidence-based decision-making, emphasizing that “good statistics is cheaper than bad decisions”.
Part of the program was the awarding of the City Government of Baguio and the Provincial Governments of Benguet and Apayao for their exemplary performance in gathering updated tourism-related statistics in their respective localities. The participants were also given a tour around the recently opened Museo Kordlilyera of UP Baguio. xxx
