Autonomy and Good Governance – DILG-CAR and the Province of Ifugao lead the Cordillera Month Celebration with the theme “Regional autonomy for good governance”.

BAGUIO CITY – A Kapihan was held in NEDA-CAR last June 29 where the RDC-CAR highlighted the increasing support to and fast-tracking of Cordillera autonomy, the growth of Cordillera economy and the upcoming Cordillera Month festivities. It was attended by representatives from the media, regional line agencies and LGUs.

Autonomy

RDC Chair and Baguio City Mayor Mauricio Domogan shared that “what they are asking for in the constitution in relation to the Cordillera is already in our proposed organic act”, based on the recently concluded public consultations on the draft federal constitution in Baguio initiated by the Constitutional Committee to Review the 1987 Constitution. However, he reiterated that our clamor for autonomy is in the present constitution thus supporting “autonomy towards federalism”.

Economy

CAR had the fastest growing regional economy in 2017 at 12.1%. RDC Vice-chair and NEDA Regional Director Milagros Rimando shared that the growth was attributed to CAR being an industry-led economy. This is in contrast to all but three other regions in the country which are services-led economies. Regions III and IV-A are industry-led, while ARMM is agriculture-led. She emphasized that the RDC is working with PEZA to move beyond Baguio City, where these industries are concentrated, and build more economic zones throughout the Cordillera.

Festivity

Preparations for the Cordillera month celebration are complete and the province of Ifugao is ready for all the activities during the Cordillera month according to Engr. Carmelita Buyuccan. The annual Unity Gong Relay shall once again be the centerpiece of the founding anniversary celebration. Starting from Ifugao, the Unity Gong will work its way around the region spreading its theme of regional autonomy towards good governance. The province of Ifugao and the DILG are hosts of this year’s celebration. (by Marlo T. Lubguban, NEDA- SPCAR)
