A resolution was approved by the Cordillera Regional Development Council (CAR RDC) requesting the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) to include a rider question on ethnicity in the Census of Population to be conducted in CAR this coming August.
The RDC has long been advocating the importance of generating statistics on indigenous peoples (IPs) and ethnolinguistic groups in the region so that appropriate policies and projects that will best respond to the Cordillera situation and needs of its IPs can be formulated.
According to the PSA-CAR, the ethnicity component was integrated in the 2010 Census through a MOA entered into by the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) and the National Statistics Office (NSO), now the PSA. However, like the mid-decade census conducted in 1995 and 2007, said component was not included as one of the data items in the questionnaire of the 2015 Census of Population.
The country’s statistics agency informed the body that the ethnicity component shall form part of the data items to be collected in the 2020 CPH.
