“All work and no play makes one dull”.
This saying could have been what was in the minds of twenty-three young and not-so- young NEDA-CAR staff as they braved Typhoon Karen’s wind and rains on their way to Naga City in the early morning of October 16, 2016. They were set to represent the region in the 3rd Luzon Inter-RDC Secretariat Olympics (LIRSPO) scheduled to start the next day, October 17.
The week-long LIRSPO is participated by NEDA Regions 1, 2, 3, 4A, 4B, and 5. Events include a zumba competition, basketball, volleyball, table tennis , badminton, darts, and chess.
To further enhance camaraderie among the participants, NEDA Region 5, this year’s host region, introduced an innovation – the Laro ng Lahi, a series of Filipino parlor games, this time with each team composed of representatives from all the participating regions.
The inter-regional Olympics has its roots in the early ‘90s when then-NEDA Regional Director Joseph Alabanza gathered together the staff of NEDA-I and CAR for a friendly sports competition. This was revived in 2012 when staff from these two regions engaged in various ball, board and parlor games in a beach resort in La Union. In 2013, NEDA Region 2 joined the friendly competition which was held in Baguio City. In 2014, all seven NEDA regional offices in Luzon officially became participants in what is now officially called -Luzon Inter-RDC Secretariat Olympics.
From 2012 to 2015, NEDA-CAR has been the undisputed over-all champion. This year, with the same determination and mindset it has had through the years, NEDA CAR is set to win yet another championship.
