The Regional Statistical Coordination Committee (RSCC), chaired by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) conducted a lecture series on statistics last October 23, 2013 to revitalize the Philippine Statistical Association Inc. (PSAI), a group of professionals committed to promote the proper use of statistics.
The revitalization of the PSAI is essential in helping the RSCC in increasing public awareness and appreciation of the importance of statistics.
Despite efforts to make the public appreciate statistics, many people appear to find it difficult and uninteresting, said Aldrin Bahit of the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB).
Bahit said that the practical use of statistics has been underrated, however, in this information age, its significance is becoming more apparent. “Statistics provide information power and help people make intelligent choices”, he added.
A significant development on statistics was Republic Act 10625 or the Philippine Statistical Act of 2013 which was signed into law by President Benigno Aquino III last September 12. The law merges the National Statistics Office (NSO), National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB), Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS) and Bureau of Labor and Employment Statistics (BLES) under the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) which is attached to NEDA for purposes of policy coordination.
With this merging, data collection and compilation shall be harmonized with a single agency catering to statistical information needs of the public.
